The Spirit of Trees Autumn project - more info
Join us on a journey into the sacred forest where you’ll learn how to draw and sketch trees that were held in the highest regard by our ancestors. Packed with technical tricks for drawing and painting trees, this project is also steeped in magic and folklore as we learn about the ‘spirit of trees’.
Project contents:
Cycle 1: Hazel | Hazel & Magic, Sketching Hazel leaves, Drawing the whole tree - studies of hazelnuts, buds and branches, Sketching the hazel tree - trunks in pencil, ink & watercolour,
Cycle 2: Alder & Birch | Finding common ground - leaf shape, catkins and cones, Painting catkins & cones in watercolour, Colour Mixing exercise - how to create a ‘muted’ palette for Autumn, Painting the whole tree - Hazel, Painting the whole tree - Alder and some ideas for Silver Birch.
Cycle 3: The Mighty Oak Part 1 | Acorns and leaves - painting turning oak leaves and acorns in watercolour, Oak leaf shapes from different species, Tips for drawing and painting curling leaves, Acorns change too - matching the changing colours with watercolour,
Cycle 4: The Mighty Oak Part 1 | Sketching sections of the Oak tree in pencil (using windows), The Stick tree technique for fleshing out a tree from a sketch, Inky oak with a textured ‘topping’ for the bark, A full watercolour study of an Oak tree and other composition ideas.
Cycle 5: Yew | Branches, berries and leaves in watercolour, Yew regeneration study in ink, watercolour and pastel pencil, Yew bark - textures colours and patterns (Ink & Watercolour)
Cycle 6: Yew Part 2 | Sketchbook Experiments - windows of observation to test materials, A young Yew tree step by step with ink & pastel pencil, An older Yew tree step by step using ink & pastel (inspired by the Crowhurst Yew)
Materials used in this project (not included in project price): 2B Pencil, graphite stick, Burnt umber + Burnt Sienna drawing inks, 12 pan set of watercolours, Size 1 Rigger Brush, Size 6 round watercolour brush, Burnt Umber pastel pencil, chalk pencil. All materials are available in our Art Shop
